A note about off-site resources:

Michigan is fortunate as a state to have had the two earliest-born fiddlers ever to record, Jasper “Jep” Bisbee recorded by Thomas Edison and Col. John A. Pattee recorded by Columbia. Beyond that, the state was fortunate to draw the attention of early folklorists including Alan Lomax and Ivan Walton. More recently, folklorists like Paul Gifford and enthusiasts like Karl Byarski have contributed untold numbers of recordings to our collective knowledge of fiddle music in the state. Here are some essential links to great off-site collections of recordings:

All fiddlers with recordings on this page should have a fiddler bio on this site.  Search in the archive section by category “fiddler bio.”

The recordings on the playlist of Jasper “Jep” Bisbee were recorded by Thomas Edison in 1923 at the behest of Henry Ford. The recordings of Col. John A. Pattee were recorded in 1924 by Columbia records. Please be aware that historical recordings are not always of high quality. If anyone has any better quality versions of these recordings, please reach out.

Bisbee and Pattee

Thanks to Jim McKinney and Glenn Hendrix for sending me these recordings made by Al Smitley of the Tyler – Mahaffee Farewell Gathering in 1980, and for Paul Tyler for also having them up so I can cross reference the titles.

Patrick Bonner recordings.

Due to the sheer number of Pat Bonner recordings, there is no playlist on this page. See the links below:

The Alan Lomax collection is linked at the top of the page.

The below playlist is for unknown recordings bumping around in the collections. If you know who these fiddlers are, please let me know.
